Diderot & D'Alembert: L'Encyclopedie... ( Encyclopedie, Encyclopedia ) 36 Volumes Plus Plates
3rd edition, 1778-1779. Condition: 4to (26 x 20 cm), contemporary sprinkled calf boards, all volumes re-spined in late 19th century, in heavily gilt decorated calf with raised bands and spine labels. Light corner rubbing and minor rubbing to extremities, all volumes tight and in very good condition, but two volumes (#s 3 & 4) are in an 8vo edition, in contemporary quarter calf and patterned paper- covered boards, from the Berne 1781 edition, which, as the title page states, "Edition exactement conforme a celle de Pellet in-quarto." Thus, all text is present, with 2 of the 36 volumes in contempo rary replacements. The 3 plate volumes are all present but in mixed states; first volume is Geneva, 1778 in contemporary speckled calf and is 1 cm shorter than text volumes; 2nd vol. is Lausanne 1780 and is 4 cm shorter than text volumes; 3rd volume is uniform with text volumes. All three have hundreds of plates and are complete.
